Dzogchen

Dzogchen is considered a direct and advanced path of meditation within Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Its teachings must come from a qualified teacher, with a proper introduction to the nature of mind and guidance for practice.

Without that introduction, understanding can remain conceptual. Ideas about the practice can become an obstacle to the direct recognition it points towards.

Precautions

Dzogchen and Mahamudra are considered direct, swift paths of meditation. They can involve emotional upheaval, unusual meditative experiences known as nyam, and intense highs and lows. Take these cautions seriously if you have a history of mental health difficulties or are experiencing significant emotional distress. These practices are not suitable for everyone.

  • Receive pointing-out instructions from a qualified teacher before embarking on Dzogchen or Mahamudra. A teacher can answer questions as they arise and provide guidance and tools for your practice.
  • Do not rely on books and the internet alone to guide your practice. Use them to find a qualified teacher, then connect with that teacher.
  • Caring for your mind always remains your own responsibility.
